tchaikovsky is proud
In case anyone is baffled by this, there’s a Tchaikovsky piece in which there’s supposed to be a loud sound but he never specified what you should use to make that sound. People have done all kinds of weird shit depending on how they think the sound should, well, sound. Hitting a large piece of wood with a sledgehammer is a relatively conventional one.
One of the things that I’m fascinated with is how people view wildlife and natural processes.
When I posted the question, a lot of the answers belied the belief that man can do no good. The remaining answers belied the belief that animals were helpless creatures like accident-prone toddlers. (A lot of people asked if the whale had just accidentally stranded herself….and died….)
These animals have been through millions of years of evolution and they’re good at what they do. They are absolutely badass at surviving in their environment.
I think this story really appealed to me, because not only was this not related to the actions of evil humans, but also the whale died not because she was a dumbass toddler that just rolled over on the beach and stranded herself.
She was battle-scarred from fighting off orcas and and did not go down without an epic fight.
Why did they kill it though? I understand when a shark kills something, but they do it for food. Why did they kill it? Why bully an animal to the point it dies, just to kill it?
Well, Orca are wild animals.
While we think of torture and bullying as immoral, whales don’t subscribe to our ethics.
They regularly toy with their prey, sometimes for hours.
They also practice what’s called “Surplus Killing“ where they kill far more prey than they can eat, ….for fun.
The other thing is that Orca are apex predators and some orca specialize in hunting and eating other whales.
THere’s a reason why they have the name Killer Whale and it’s not because they are awesome…..it’s the other killer.
I mean, shit, I think that understanding transcends languages. In Swedish Orca’s are called späckhuggare, or literally translated as “Blubber Biter/Striker/Slashers”.
